While many early or pre-cancerous lesions can be treated effectively by dermatologists with topical or non-surgical treatments, that is not always the case with more advanced skin cancers. They require surgical removal. Since many of these cancers appear on the face, these excisions can create defects with aesthetic and functional problems. 

Mohs micrographic surgical methods have been gaining more and more acceptance, especially for removing facial basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Mohs surgery only takes the necessary amount of tissue around the skin cancer, minimizing the excision area, but leaving a defect.
